Trash as clutter

A lot of the homes in which I work have a sizeable amount of trash in them. I often wonder, but seldom ask, why they don’t just throw it away.

It’s confusing to me because I’m finding there are a few different reasons why.

Here’s a great post by Kate, who says her ADD greatly contributes to her home’s clutter.

Sometimes people don’t even think to throw trash away.   By the time they are done with one thing they have mentally moved on to the next.  The remnants of their first activity stay right where they have finished using them.

Some people aren’t detail oriented and don’t even see the trash. So, they don’t pick it up.

Some people have grown up surrounded by detritus and, whether it bothers them or not, being surrounded by a bit of trash isn’t something they consider to be an option.

It is often a matter of priorities. Picking up some broken, old things in the living room is beneath watching Mad Men on their list.

Take a look around you now. Is there trash in your house or in your office?

When do you plan to throw it away?
